Microsoft Acquires Gears of War License From Epic Games

Microsoft has now officially acquired the rights to the Xbox’s flagship title, Gears of War. Along with the rights to the existing games, it has also acquired the rights to make new games. This means that it is now up to Microsoft to produce the next Gears of War title. This also solidifies Gears of War as an exclusive Xbox IP.

Microsoft has given the job to Black Tusk Studios, which is Micosoft’s Vancouver based developer and boy do they have some shoes to fill. However, Black Tusk Studios won’t be completely in the dark as they have hired former Epic Games executive and director of production, Rod Fergusson. The same guy who personally oversaw the first three Gears of War games. ┬áNow, you might remember Rod Fergusson from his stint with Irrational games and his work with Bioshock Infinite. He also used to work for Microsoft for a decade back in the mid 90’s to mid 2000’s. So returning with Black Tusk Studios is somewhat of a homecoming.

Rod Fergusson was quoted about joining Black Tusk Studios and returning to Microsoft.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining Black Tusk Studios to oversee development on the Gears of War franchise,” . “I’ve been privileged to work on a lot of great games with a lot of great teams, but Gears has had the most impact on me professionally and personally, so this really feels like a homecoming. I can’t wait to share more with you all soon.”
