Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’s Movement and Combat Changes Revealed

EA’s Dice has released two new videos to show two of the main facets of the next Mirror’s Edge game. If you’ve played the original, you’ll know that Movement and Combat are the two most important parts and some would argue it’s the entirety of the game.

So, to cut to the chase, here’s the first video on movement. You’ll see in the video that there are most of the same returning movement mechanics. Your typical wall run, jumping over walls, climbing, etc. But you’ll see sprinkled in, some new additions that really change how free-flowing the parkour is. For a game that’s mostly about parkour, it’s nice to see that they’ve added a few new things in that department. One of my favorite additions is the inclusion of something called The Shift. This ability allows Faith to gain a burst of speed in any direction. This should allow for some quick getaways or to get you up close and personal with your enemies. Combine this with the ability to make a 180 or 90 degree turn almost instantly, known as Quickturn and you’ve got yourself an extremely mobile protagonist.

As for combat, we have some changes and additions in the form of keeping things fluid. When you’re fighting off your enemies, you can use a combination of light and heavy attacks to leave your enemies stunned. This is the best opportunity to use the environment to finish them off. All of these things build focus and you can use that focus to use swift attacks to keep your momentum which allows for heavier hits and other impressive maneuvers.

Focus is one of the most important parts of the combat system, as maintaining focus is what keeps the enemies from being able to hit you. When you get low, the enemies will hit harder and you’ll find it harder to dodge them. So make sure you keep up that momentum to refresh your focus, otherwise you won’t be able to see the cool new and powerful attacks she can perform.

And it’s great to see some enhanced hand to hand combat in Mirror’s Edge, as EA’s Dice has announced that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will not feature any gunplay. So while your enemies will still have guns, you won’t be wielding them.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is set to launch on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on May 24th.
