You know it’s sad when mentioning how cliche first person shooters are getting is itself turning into a cliche. Sure, everyone knows how fun they are to play. You are always guaranteed to have a good time whenever you pop in MW2 (screw Black Ops) and I consider myself to be a hardcore closet Killzone 2 fan – if that genre of gamer can even exist. In this day and age however, it’s hard to get excited when a new shooter is announced. The market is already overflowing with them and the gameplay is generally very similar throughout. I also get this bad taste in my mouth whenever I hear developers talk about how their game is going to be unique and set itself apart from the competition. We’ve heard it all before! Come launch time that over hyped, frame-rate dipping, carbon copy of a game is going to be revealed for what it really is: Something that strives to be like Call of Duty but fails on all fronts. I’m not saying COD is perfect. It certainly isn’t. So shame on most developers for making it the golden standard amongst shooters. All in all, I have been craving a game to come along and make first person shooters interesting again.
Thankfully, one did.
I found out about Rage early last month, which is pretty late considering the amount of hype that has been built up around this game. Not all mainstream hype, but this game seems to have garnered a lot of interest from fellow gamers who, like myself, are dying to get their hands on a drastic re-imagining of the FPS.
Rage is set in a post-apocalyptic world that has a future/western feel to it. It mixes elements of exploration and character development while giving the player a unique arsenal to fight the diverse and aggressive clans that roam the world. I would say Borderlands and Fallout 3 are most closely comparable to Rage, only less RPG than Fallout and more FPS than Borderlands. Since this title is published by gaming giant Bethesda, it should come as little surprise that the art style is VERY similar to Fallout. This is a game definitely worth checking out and I will be eager to get my hands on it come the release date, October 4.
