Big news out of Gamescom was the announcement of the next Tomb Raider game by the team over at Crystal Dynamics being an Xbox One exclusive. During this announcement many took to forums, twitter, and many other forms of social media to voice their displeasure. Many Sony Fans even said they would boycott Tomb Raider as a whole, but it seems as if they have spoken too soon because just today head of Xbox, Phil Spencer confirmed in an interview with Eurogamer that Rise of the Tomb Raider will only be a timed exclusive.
During this exclusive it should be mentioned that Phil Spencer did NOT release the length of this timed exclusive nor the financials behind the deal. So, just like with any timed exclusive content on the Xbox whether it be Call of Duty DLC, or full games we will expect to see it on other platforms including the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. But at least for this holiday season, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be exclusively Xbox, releasing on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Phil Spencer said:
“Yes, the deal has a duration. I didn’t buy it. I don’t own the franchise,” said Spencer. “I have Tomb Raider shipping next holiday exclusively on Xbox. It is Xbox 360 and Xbox One. I’m not trying to fake anybody out in terms of where this thing is. What they do with the franchise in the long run is not mine. I don’t control it.”
This was a huge issue for fans because of the success of the last Tomb Raider game released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC. This warranted a Definitive edition that released on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But the outcry is completely understandable in the eyes of Phil Spencer.
“I get the reaction I see. If I’m a PlayStation person all of a sudden I feel like, the franchise has gone. I didn’t buy the IP. I didn’t buy the studio. It’s not mine. Where this thing will go over time, just like Dead Rising or Ryse, we’ll see what happens with the game. I don’t own every iteration of Tomb Raider.”
